The Blow Up exhibition of 1987 was presented at six museums—in Lucerne, Stuttgart, Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Bonn—and organized by six curators, inclusive of Martin Kunz for Kunstmuseum Luzern. The leader and principal curator of the project was Tilman Osterwald of Stuttgart’s Württembergischer Kunstverein, where the show was first presented. The theme of the exhibition was large-scale, monumental photography, outside of photography’s habitual conventions, and the show included the work of twenty contemporary artist/photographers, both European and American. Some of those who later became well known include Marina Abramovic, Günter Förg, Joseph Kosuth, and Katharina Sieverding, as well as the collaborative couples Ulay and Marina Abramovic, and Clegg and Guttman. The collaboration of the six museums was motivated by the scope of the exhibition’s theme, and first of all by technical concerns and the complexity of its installation. The show traveled for two years.
